SEVERN CLASS SPECIFICATION
Length : 17m (55ft. 9in)
Beam : 5.5m (18ft)
Displacement : 37.5 tonnes
Speed : 25 knots (the 'older' Arun class would just about do 18 knots!)
Range : 250 nautical miles
Engines : Twin Caterpillar diesels (approx. 1200 bhp each)
Crew : 6 brave men and women of Barra
Introduced : 1993 (arrived at Barra 22/05/98)
The sight of the (bigger!) new lifeboat appearing through the sea haze, ripping towards us and stopping on a sixpence was awesome. Everyone was very impressed.
