A Brief History of the Hartlepool Station

The Hartlepool Lifeboat

Welcome

Some notes about the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

The RNLI has provided the lifeboat service for Great Britain and Ireland since 1824, and its boats can reach any point up to 50 miles off the coast. There are more than 200 lifeboat stations and their lifeboats launch more than 5000 times a year, saving on average 1300 lives. They are manned by highly trained volunteer crews, and every penny required to maintain the service is raised from voluntary contributions. The Institution is proud of its independent status as a registered charity, but works closely with HM Coastguard and other organisations to provide a co-ordinated sea rescue service.

The Hartlepool Lifeboat

Modern lifeboats are sophisticated vessels and range from high speed inflatable inshore lifeboats to 17m all-weather boats. The larger all-weather boats are capable of high speed in atrocious weather, are self-righting after a capsize and are fully fitted with modern navigation, location and communications equipment.

The current lifeboat the 'RNLI City of Sheffield' was funded mainly by the City of Sheffield Lifeboat Appeal which raised £420,000 in its 18 month duration. The boat is a modified Tyne Class lifeboat and cost £500,000 in 1987.

Latest news

As you can see from the photographs below, "City of Sheffield" is now on her new berth. Hand rails and water are now on the pontoon. With access to the boat via the footbridge in front of the boathouse the Station is able to receive visitors without having to consult tide tables etc (book in advance if you want to visit!). The Station is also able to shave a few minutes off the service response time. Docked Hartlepool Lifeboat

Moving the boat has also meant that the crew changing room is not big enough, so plans have been drawn up to enlarge the boathouse. When the actual building work will start is unknown at present. The Crew of the Hartlepool Lifeboat

The Hartlepool Lifeboat festival passed off more or less as planned and attendance was estimated at over 10,000 for the two days.

The Radio Cleveland Lifeboat 2000 appeal (which is raising money to replace the inshore lifeboat) has now passed £51,000 which is excellent going as the fundraising was only started in March 1999.

All at Hartlepool thank you for visiting this home page.

Thanks to Malcolm Cook (Station Management Committee) for this information.
